Artist Mary was born on Wulirankuwu Country, Melville Island, part of the Tiwi Islands in Northern Australia. She was taught to speak Tiwi and to understand the Tiwi song-lines, as well as to carve and weave pandanus for ceremonial body ornaments in her early adulthood. Mary is a Traditional Land-Owner of Milikapiti and the surrounding area to Karslake, an area known as Wulirankuwu Country. She paints with locally sourced ochres on paper, canvas, bark and also weaves with pandanus. Mary is strong in her culture, can speak Tiwi and is proud to hand down Tiwi culture and knowledge to young people on the Islands.
